21.02.2012- Fashion Week Top Five: New York AW12/13

Tuesday, 21 February 2012

Whilst I usually struggle to whittle down my favourite collections from New York, this time around I was able to select five standout shows without too much agonising. I don't know whether it's because I generally prefer the spring shows, or the anticipation of London Fashion Week which made New York feel like a bit of an anticlimax, but choosing this selection was uncharacteristically straightforward! These are the shows which stood head and shoulders above the rest for me this NYFW:

Functional details met form-defining frocks in Victoria Beckham's collection, which also incorporated military inspiration in the shape of heavy boots, exposed socks and gleaming buttons. A distinctly tougher aesthetic when compared to her previous collections, but with a series of silhouettes which are rapidly becoming a signature of the brand.

There was a distinct flavour of the 1940s at Jenny Packham, most obviously in the retro hairstyling and vampish make-up design. Cinched in waists, flowing fabrics and sparkling details made this show one of New York's most elegant.

Yet more vintage inspiration was showcased at Lela Rose, from the perfectly coiffed hair to the classic shapes at work throughout the collection. Vibrant cerise pinks and warm ochres contrasted perfectly against ice-cool white- and made a refreshing change from some of the more austere colours on offer at NYFW.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's latest designs for their label The Row were simple, chic and classically stylish. Impeccably cut and featuring a versatile range of fabrics, this collection was perfectly complemented by an amazing array of co-ordinating bags and minimal accessorising.

The Tibi presentation felt like one of New York's most accessible. Cocoon coats, androgynous tailoring and eye-catching prints all came together to create a youthful yet practical take on city dressing.

What did you think of New York Fashion Week? And which shows were your favourite?
