22.06.2013- Laura Ashley AW13

Saturday, 22 June 2013

Last week, I was lucky enough to be invited along to Laura Ashley's AW13 press day, held at the super swish Il Bottaccio in central London. After styling some of their spring fashion collection for my post over on their blog back in March, I was really excited to see what they have in store for next season, and it of course goes without saying that I couldn't wait to see their new homeware pieces either. The press day also incorporated a special preview of the Laura Ashley 60 exhibition, so it was also really interesting to learn more about how the company started and has continued to evolve whilst retaining a really strong sense of design heritage. Here's a little look at how I got on:

Laura Ashley's fashion collection for next season is classic and elegant, but also incorporates a really trendy feel. Their take on monochrome is bold, vibrant and definitely inspired by all things mod. I loved how the pieces were styled for a top-to-toe take on the trend, but everything in this fashion story is wonderfully adaptable too. With practical winder dressing in mind, the design team have also created an amazing collection of knitwear (I am already saving my pennies for the white fluffy knit!), perfect for keeping cosy and dressing up as the weather gets chillier. Cosy heritage details including tweeds and checks were also favourites here, and I've definitely spied a statement necklace or two to add to my collection!

Interiors wise, I more or less fell head over heels in love with everything from the new season range. Laura Ashley has rapidly become a real go-to homeware shop for me, and is always my first port of call when I'm looking for some inspiration on how to spruce up my house. It goes without saying that I'm already coveting their beautiful Peony Amethyst printed china, and I adored all of the intricate floral prints which carried through accent pieces such as cushions and bedding. Not only that, but I also loved all of the furniture on display (finding myself suddenly overwhelmed with the urge to completely redecorate!) and the super cute home accessories including jewellery boxes, frames and vases. With the festive season in mind, I'm also already keeping my eyes peeled for their adorable cutout Christmas bunting.

A sense of nostalgia is something which permeates Laura Ashley's design vision for AW13. Celebrating 60 years since Laura and Bernard Ashley started their business by hand printing scarves on their kitchen table, the brand has delved into the archive to reissue some old favourites, including prints available as wallpaper and fabric. Hearing all about the heritage of the company from Laura Ashley's lovely archivist Angela, I was amazed at how much the process of designing collections today is influenced by the past, updated for the 21st century with new colourways and techniques. It was also lovely too see some pieces from their archive on display, paying tribute to how much the vision of Laura and Bernard still continues to shape the Laura Ashley aesthetic which we recognise so well today.

A big thank you to Laura Ashley and their lovely press team (Kate, Emma and Sarah!) for showing me around!

Are you a fan of Laura Ashley? And do you like the look of their AW13 collections?

  2. I think I may have spotted you while I was there! It was such a fantastic event, I think my favourite section was the archive - seeing the story from the beginning :-)

You've done a great job with these shots, I was a little too nervous to get out my camera!
