18.09.2013- Orla Kiely SS14

Wednesday, 18 September 2013

Of all the presentations which take place season after season at London Fashion Week, it's the one from Orla Kiely which is always guaranteed to be absolutely charming, beautifully creative and leave me with a wishlist as long as my arm. The styling is always absolutely spot on, and it's always really exciting to see how each new collection is themed; you might remember a distinct Orla does Mad Men ambiance from last season, and a stunning tea dance at Somerset House from this time last year. On Saturday, myself and a bounty of other guests were invited to escape from the London rain and immerse ourselves in Orla Kiely's vision of SS14, as Elms Lesters Painting Rooms were transformed into the African savannah for a very special walk on the wild side...

With more than a fleeting reference to the aesthetics of Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, this presentation captured a sense of whimsy, girlish adventure and a really youthful, vibrant energy. Signature collar details were offset by nipped in waists and a vivid array of pearl embellishments. Pastel pink tones sat happily alongside fresh whites, staple dark blues and vivid sunset oranges- all accessorised with schoolgirl knee high socks and berets. I really loved the contrasting textures at play throughout the collection, from the subtle jacquard work to the quilted detailing, and was also hugely impressed with the safari style bags which punctuated each look. It was also lovely to see super stylist Leith Clark at work, having been a huge fan of her approach for what feels like forever. I also really love how characterful the whole presentation was- taking on a slightly theatrical stance to present the collection in situé is something which I think lends itself really well to making each piece really come alive, and it's really fascinating to see how the inspiration behind the overall aesthetic is continually referred to throughout the creative process.
