12.12.2013- M&S SS14

Thursday, 12 December 2013

A few weeks ago, I popped along to the Marks & Spencer SS14 press day, held against the spectacular backdrop of One Marylebone. After falling in love with their AW13 collection at the start of the year, I was really eager to see what next season holds in store- and I was not disappointed. M&S have really refined their womenswear design over the last few seasons, taking high quality staples and marrying them with trend driven pieces which capture the essence of the season at really affordable price points. For SS14, their design process has been refined even further, offering a series of sleek and sophisticated fashion stories which come together to create a distinctly luxe aesthetic:

Each womenswear story is marked by focused, elegant and seamless design, taking inspiration from a variety of different sources. The White Out story is punctuated by crisp lines, a fresh, tonal colour palette and a variety of textures which add a really dynamic edge- keeping things from feeling too static. This core collection offers a variety of beautifully constructed basics which would meld effortlessly into any wardrobe, as well as a selection of expertly tailored items which offer a summer ready work wardrobe in waiting. Next up, Worldwide captures the spirit of summer holidays, incorporating bold prints, statement accessories and vibrant colours- I particularly loved the navy printed two piece which was on display. 90s Luxe taps into the effortless minimalist aesthetic which has proved so popular of late, focusing on high quality design and versatility- a standout piece from this story was the black trench coat which can be worn in a host of different ways. Paint Box features some of my favourite pieces for SS14- bold, statement hues are married with luxe fabrics such a silks and leathers to create a story which almost transcends seasons- these are investment pieces which will last year after year. Finally Pretty Things offers a classic, feminine touch, focusing on airy fabrics and light pastel hues, all accessorised with touches of embellishment. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for the lemon coat when it hits stores- it looks set to be another sell out!

Moving on, accessories for SS14 are simple and easy to wear, with statement necklaces once again coming to the fore, but this time in a lovely assortment of rose gold tones, with ultra modern acetate touches and gem detailing. I was also really impressed by the sunglasses, and have already drawn up a wishlist of the pairs which I expect I'll be adding to my collection! M&S is generally my one stop shop for lingerie too, so I was amazed to see the array of products which will be hitting stores next season. As well as another stunning collection from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley,  M&S have also once again invested heavily in their garment technology, creating a range of underwear specifically designed for the gym and a line of sports socks designed to prevent against blisters whilst running (hooray!)

Finally, on to homeware. I've been avidly searching for some interiors inspiration for what feels like forever, and I was really impressed by the new season pieces which M&S have to offer. Once again the design feels really refined, simple and elegant, with a few statement pieces leaping to the fore (how gorgeous is the mosaic effect table?!) and some gorgeous accessories offering plenty of potential for sprucing up the home as the warmer weather approaches.

A big thank you to Megan and Isa for talking me through the collections!
